EnterMedia 8.9R1
Posted by at 11:08 AM
The release notes for EnterMedia 8.9R1 can be found here. Update instructions are also documented. It is always recommended that the update be performed first in a sandbox environment. Local testing will empower your administrators to reapply any customizations and troubleshoot and potential problems without losing any time in a production environment. This is especially useful if the local installation has not been updated for several release cycles.
Many old and new clients have expressed interest in our consulting services lately, so Hit List Sponsorship will be driving development setting the stage for version 9.0. Custom applications, advanced module relationships, additional video features and more precise permissions will all be available over the next few releases.
Our new support model encourages customers to interact with us using a new issue tracker that will provide more detail and reference information. Details for our new support model can be found on our Support page.
As always, our Google Group is available for basic questions.

EnterMedia 8.43 Release Notes

Fixed Bugs:
30738275 - Home Permissions Does not Turn Off - The home button was such a staple of EnterMedia that although we made it a permission, the button had never been officially tied to that permission. Some installations have opted to remove the home button and promote the company logo as the official 'Home' button. This, in combination with a general overhaul of our permissions area, motivated us to clean up this loose end. The permission is now fully functional.
29149779 - Permissions: After Upload, Assets are Unavailable Until Manually Assigned - When the catalog view was set to public = false only an administrator could assign assets to be viewed by other users. After much internal debate, we decided that the asset owner should determine what other users and groups have access to the asset. This is just a default setting and can be changed on a per application basis.
33369401 - Multi-Download Disappears - This issue made it inconvenient, though not impossible, to download assets from the table view. The download button would disappear when a user would interact with assets in other ways. Now, the button is static and assets can be easily downloaded in bulk from the standard table view or the basket table view.
33482077 - Add to Basket from Asset Preview - Previously assets had to be added to or removed from the basket using the multi-select feature on the table view. Assets could not be added or removed individually from the asset preview area. The demand for advanced basket features has caused us to add a fully functional button to the asset preview area that accomplished this.
32625521 - Unable to search by date - The date based metadata had 2 bugs. The first was preventing the date picker from executing a search properly. The second was an overwrite that was performed anytime the dates were modified using the date picker when the same date metadata field was also in the advanced searching area. Both issues are now resolved.
30812623 - Files without extensions do not produce thumbnails or other conversions. - The new EnterMedia logic will automatically identify and label the file with the appropriate extension and convert it accordingly. This resolves issues for files that were originally saved by Mac machines that do not label the files with extensions.
32625023 - Printing of Lightboxes - Users can now print from the asset preview area using the file menu. A print preview page is provided and metadata can be printed as well.
33643031 - Expanding / Hiding Editing Boxes breaks links. - The new user interface has changed the convenience of accessing and changing, settings, history and other asset menus. Some of the links were casualties of the process. The closure of this ticket confirms their resoration.
New Features:
Upgraded Asset View - The design team that brought you the EM8 layout has been budgeted to improve the entire layout of the asset view. It now offers more information and intuitive navigation than ever before. Icons and descriptions are available for each function
32625023 - Printing of Lightboxes - A printing permission has been added that will populate under the File menu on the asset preview page. The print allows the user to print the asset along with associated metadata.
32622149 - Bridge modules to other modules - The modules area can now be linked to the assets area, or to other modules. This is a powerful addition to the already powerful modules area. Bridging allows databases to link to each other and supports one to one, one to many and many to many relationships between database entries.
Enhancements:
29078165 - Iconize all of ther emdtailactions - Rob has redesigned the UI of EnterMedia to add a wow-factor to the presentation of assets. One phase of this project included creating new sets of icons and pairing them with intuitive links to help users navigate the system with maximum efficiency.
33642179 - Style new comments area. - The new comments area keeps pace with the rest of the new UI.
Documentation:
Watermarking - Watermarking has been changed to a role based or application settings based permission. This allows the ability to quickly assign watermarking for specific users, groups or roles. The documentation for how to take advantage of this feature is hosted on the EnterMedia website.
Release Note for EMPush
Posted by at 2:38 PM
Here are some new release notes for EMPush 1.3,
1. Refactor push queue to deal with shared events so the server does not overload it with conversion complete events.
2. Deal with queue dropping tasks when flooded.
3. Reduce the number of logs.
4. Reduce memory from Lucene searches being loaded and discarded.
5. Speed up large recordset traversal using LuceneHitTracker with page support.
6. Eliminate closed searcher errors using Lucene's NRT SearcherManager.
We created a PDF to show the asset handling API we use internal to EnterMedia:
http://entermediasoftware.com/views/learningcenter/wiki/Events_API.html
Lucene is a part of Apache that is used for full text searching and indexing. Between tweaking the code and working with Lucene we were able to seal a memory leak that was causing tomcat to require a restart after many hours of extreme processing. Since the new code was applied, the system has been running consistently without requiring manual intervention.
The logs were getting excessive and taking up space. This and future honing of logs will help keep information compact and relevant should they ever be needed for record keeping or for troubleshooting purposes.
Overall, the update has made EMPush much more efficient and reliable. It has also helped provide insight for how to better sync its capabilities with the EnterMedia parent product.
Digital Asset Management Nirvana with EMPush
Posted by at 1:24 PM
EMPush is a new app that gives EnterMedia digital asset management users an easy way to get their assets online, without all the fuss of actively uploading.
EMPush automatically takes your assets and pushes them to another EnterMedia server, including EnterMedia servers sitting outside of your firewall. EMPush does conversions locally, creates proxies and allows you to push just the metadata and proxy to the external server. Users can then manage, search and distribute digital files without effecting bandwidth across the network.
In just a few steps a user can be well on their way to digital asset management nirvana. Simply download EMPush, set up hot folders and watch as EMPush takes care of all the uploading.
EMPush requires EnterMedia digital asset management software. EnterMedia and EMPush can be downloaded here http://entermediasoftware.com/views/download/index.html

EnterMedia Supports SWF Format
Posted by at 2:06 PM
The SWF format and its varying controls have provided a series of interesting obstacles over the past few months. Different programs produce files whose built in properties were inconsistent with each other and therefore difficult pin a single solution to. EnterMedia's developers have decided to take a new road. Instead of trying to conform the swf files to the standards of other formats, they will be hosted in their original form with whatever controls they come with. EnterMedia formally welcomes all swf files to our ever increasing list of supported digital assets.
