Video format conversion

I need my OpenEdit installation to support video format conversion. I have no experience in OpenEdit yet. I was thinking whether it is possible to add a link on the product details page which launches a pop-up. This popup will be a simple frontend to mencoder in the backend, and allow the user to convert the video asset into a different format (like AVI to FLV etc.). 

How should I go about it? Is there some documentation to help developers extend functionality in the above way?

We do not currently have any documentation for developers.  This sounds like something that could be done, but would probably take a bit of work.  You could take a look at the ImageMagickResizer class in openedit-cart to see how we interface with imageMagick.  You would probably need to create something like a VideoConverter class that could call the mencoder commands.
